In January 2022, thirty-six leaders in education, health, and justice were gathered to examine equity issues and design solutions as part of the inaugural class of the Houston 2036 Equity Task Force. The Steering Committee harnessed the power of the American Leadership Forum, Dialogue Houston, University of St. Thomas, and University of Houston Downtown. This diverse group of leaders rolled up their sleeves to address barriers to equity, with six groups pitching their vision for Houston as a model of equity by the year 2036.
Team Fit Houston emerged from the process.
The question we asked ourselves: What is the one thing that could improve daily life for Houstonians, stave off chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer, and improve mental wellbeing for Houstonians of all ages and in all communities?
Our collective answer: Physical activity that is free, available in every community, and done through a positive wellness movement. Place-based investment and cultural empathy for a healthier Houston in 2036.
Team Fit Houston took off running with a vision of HOPE. With the support and expert guidance of community leaders and the Houston 2036 Advisory Panel and Community, Fit Houston incorporated as a 501(c)3 in September 2022.
Fit Houston continues its journey toward a healthy and empowered Houston, with a growing Board of Directors and Executive Advisory Board, and more commitments and community support each day.
